By last Friday at 6 p.m., when I drove up to the roof of the Long Beach LIRR parking garage, almost every spot was taken — a few, maybe, by outbound travelers but most by locals like me looking to leave their cars as far above floodable ground as possible. People all over town planned to ride out the storm at home, with apologies to our voice mail buddy, County Executive Ed Mangano, who’d ordered us to evacuate.

Theresa Policaro has made her home on Hewlett Lane in south Bellmore for more than 30 years, and so, she said, she was reluctant to leave her house when she was ordered to evacuate last Friday by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano in preparation for Hurricane Irene, which ripped a swath of destruction across Long Island over the weekend.

Mother Nature is making herself obvious these days, with a Tuesday's 5.9 magnitude earthquake and this past weekend’s hurricane-turned-tropical storm, Irene. Irene’s wrath was predicted throughout the week as heading right for the Nassau County, with Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Atlantic Beach and Inwood among the locations directly in its path.
