Warning The Golden Tornadoes have begun to sweep past the wrestling titans of Long Island and there is no stopping them. Lawrence High School’s wrestling team has started the season the only way they know how — with tenacity, vigor and school spirit. Since the team’s return to the mat after a year, several new wrestlers have donned the blue and gold singlet for the first time.

Big performances were the rule and not the exception for Hewlett and Lawrence wrestlers at the Nassau Qualifying Tournament hosted by Long Beach last Saturday. The Bulldogs and Golden Tornadoes each had three individual champions.

Graduation was tough on the Lawrence wrestling program leaving the Golden Tornadoes with a lack of depth. Throw in the fact many of the Lawrence wrestlers were still on the gridiron while most of their competitors were honing their craft on the mats, and you have a team that expected to get off to a slow start.

Though their first official match isn’t until Jan. 8, when they’re scheduled to host South Side, the Hewlett Bulldogs have been plenty busy on the wrestling mats. Led by Lucas Pincus, captains Matt Kaminer and Oran Revivo, and returning county champion Owen Bachelder, they won the Sprig Gardner Tournament.
