Longtime Five Towns resident Phil Mistero is being remembered as a strong and loving man who cared deeply about his family and his community. Mistero died on Feb. 5, at age 77, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Originally from Indiana, Margaret Montgomery Torr Giovanniello graduated high school in Pennsylvania, went to college in Wisconsin, lived in Brooklyn, worked in New York City and settled in Cedarhurst for 45 years, and became an administrative law judge with the state’s Department of Labor.

Dr. Michael V. Santopolo, the former superintendent of the Hewlett-Woodmere School District who was responsible for building the George W. Hewlett High School, the Woodmere Middle School, and the Odgen Elementary School died on Saturday, Oct. 16. He was 89 years old.
