Carey baseball coach Marc Hedquist was a little uncertain as to what he should expect from the Seahawks in 2014. However, despite holes in the batting order, and a lot of youth in the lineup, he didn’t foresee his team struggling as much as it has in the early going.

A year removed from a conference championship, the Carey girls’ lacrosse team moved up to Nassau Conference IV where they’re facing the challenge of tougher league foes. With a young, injury-riddled lineup going up against stronger opponents, results have not been pleasant for the Lady Seahawks early on.

Despite a 1-3 start to the season, there’s plenty of optimism on the boys’ lacrosse field at Carey. Narrow defeats at the hands of some of the Nassau’s top programs in non-league play has the talented Seahawks prepared for a challenging league schedule, Carey will compete among the likes of Wantagh, South Side, Long Beach, and perennial power Garden City.

Senior point guard Dylan DeMeo knocked down a pair of free throws with 8.1 seconds to play in overtime to give No. 9 Carey a dramatic 63-62 win over top-seeded Lawrence in the quarterfinal round of the Class A playoffs on Feb. 18.
