Merrick resident and CEO of Long Beach Medical Center Douglas Melzer was recently named chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council, the association that represents Long Island’s 24 not-for-profit and public hospitals. His two-year term will expire in June 2012. The CEOs from each of the member hospitals comprise the board of directors. more

Representative Peter King got it right. Nidal Hasan, the 39-year-old Army major who killed 13 soldiers at Ford Hood and left many more injured, is a devoted Muslim of Jordanian and Palestinian decent. Witnesses at the scene said that before Hasan opened fire, he shouted, “Allahu Akbar!” Arabic for “God is great!” These are also the words shouted by suicide bombers before they attack and kill. While shooting, Hasan reportedly bowed his head in prayer while innocent people died. more
