The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education held its first 2012-13 budget workshop in February, unveiling three spending scenarios and stressing that the budget would likely exceed the 2 percent tax levy cap in order to avoid more than $3 million in cuts. Since that time, the board was notified that it would receive an unanticipated, additional $1 million in state and special education aid from prior school years, bringing the projected the tax levy increase for 2012-13 down, from 4.64 percent to roughly 4 percent. more

The district’s Board of Education placed advertisement in The New York Times, held a search meeting in March, and has been receiving leads from a search firm over the past few months. The Sewanhaka Central High School District held a search meeting on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Sewanhaka High School, to gather ideas from district residents about the district’s new superintendent. Warren Meierdiercks, who has been the district’s superintendent for the past five years, announced in December that he will be retiring on June 30, and the district has since been working to find a resident- and administration-approved replacement. more
After hearing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s budget release in early February, the Sewanhaka, Franklin Square and Elmont school districts have been on their feet, working to incorporate heavy school aid cuts and a proposed 2 percent property tax cap into their budgets. The tax cap, which was recently passed by the Senate and would take 76 of 150 votes in the Assembly to fully pass, wouldn’t go into effect until 2013, but districts are preparing ahead of time. more
