Junior Erick Vilchez went the distance, and senior Darren Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a home run as No. 3 Carey knocked off No. 6 Calhoun, 9-4, on May 15 to sweep the best-of-three Nassau Class AA quarterfinal series. Freshman Anthony Catapano added a home run and knocked in three runs.

Despite a sluggish finish, which saw Carey drop four of its last five regular-season games, the Lady Seahawks earned the No. 5 seed in the always competitive Nassau County Class AA softball playoffs.

The talk at the beginning of lacrosse season at Carey was about getting better each day, and peaking when playoff time came around. The Seahawks certainly had their highs and lows throughout the season, but after a pair of recent victories, it appears Carey is where it hoped to be going into postseason play.

It certainly wasn’t pretty, but the Seahawks will take it. After dropping its first four games, Carey got into the win column with a 41-29 victory over Long Beach last Friday in a Conference AA-III boys’ basketball game played at Island Garden in West Hempstead.
