A little more than a year after Valley Stream North delivered a first-round playoff knockout of then-three-time defending Nassau Conference IV football champion Seaford, the Spartans withstood some punches and rallied to stun the top-seeded Vikings, 21-17, in a semifinal game last Saturday evening at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.

Deep into the second overtime period of the Nassau Class A boys’ soccer quarterfinals last Friday, Hewlett junior Myles Ofri scored the deciding goal against Valley Stream North, advancing the Bulldogs to the semifinals and ending the Spartans’ season in crushing fashion.

Elmont made some noise on the soccer pitch a year ago when it hosted a playoff game for the first time in 32 years. The Spartans have carried that momentum into the 2012 season and are the team to beat in Conference AA-III.

For the sixth time in seven years, Valley Stream North captured a Nassau County boys’ track and field championship. The Spartans took the Class A crown last week at Westbury High School, totaling 122 points to win in runaway fashion.

The third annual Spartan 5K Run for MS was held on March 17, at Valley Stream North High School in Franklin Square. The course began at the high school and continued through the local neighborhood.
