Nothing could stop Belmont Park’s Opening Day from operating smoothly. The sun beamed onto the horse track, and thousands of visitors hustled to place bets and watch the races throughout the day. The excitement was palpable. Despite an overnight natural gas leak that caused the closure of Hempstead Turnpike just east of Belmont Park in Elmont for several hours last Friday, Belmont Park’s 2011 spring meet began at 10:45 a.m., as scheduled. Emergency repairs were undertaken immediately after the leak was discovered and the road was reopened just before Belmont Park’s spring meet.
