Last week, state Sen. Todd Kaminsky filed legislation requiring the commissioner of the New York State Department of Health to study and regulate 1,4-dioxane, a chemical likely to be carcinogenic, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Last year, the EPA released a report, citing dioxane was found in many water supply systems on Long Island.

Holding candles and reciting prayers along with members of the clergy in Malverne, hundreds of people gathered for a vigil to pray for Malvernite and NYPD Det. Steven McDonald at the Charles Reese Memorial Park in the village on Jan. 9. McDonald, who had a heart attack on Jan. 6, is still in critical condition at North Shore University Hospital in Nassau County.
McDonald reportedly died Jan. 10 at North Shore Hosptial while still on life support. He was 59 years old.
