'Argo' finds hope in a hopeless age

“Argo” does not take sides. It tells the story of seven people caught up in geopolitics far beyond their control. The film also reminds us that we mustn’t shut our eyes to history. In many ways, we are as helpless in 2013 as we were in 1979. We remain addicted to Middle Eastern oil, which leaves us vulnerable to despots’ whims.

As Carter noted in 1980, we need a clear and comprehensive energy policy –– one that begins with renewable-energy technologies such as wind, solar and geothermal. Now, not later, is the time to act.
