Town clerk candidates promise service and integrity
Herald File Photo
Nasrin Ahmad, left, and Jasmine Garcia-Vieux, right, are running for the Town of Hempstead clerk's position,

Although the office may have a tumultuous recent history, both candidates for the Town of Hempstead clerk post said they are looking to the future and hope to have the chance to serve residents with integrity.

The incumbent, Republican Nasrin Ahmad, is seeking election to her position for the first time. The Salisbury resident and former administrative supervisor in the clerk’s office was appointed to the post by the town board on Sept. 3.

Ahmad succeeded First Deputy Town Clerk Phil Guarnieri, who assumed office when the position became vacant after former clerk Mark Bonilla’s criminal conviction. Bonilla was dropped from the Republican ticket for November’s race several months after he was charged with official misconduct, coercion and petit larceny. Prosecutors said the charges stemmed from incidents associated with sexual harassment allegations made by town employees. He was convicted on one count of official misconduct.

Ahmad, who was born in Uganda and raised in the United Kingdom, said she was pleased to take on the job last month and hopes to continue assisting town residents. Democrat Jasmine Garcia-Vieux, a lawyer originally from Queens who now lives in Levittown, said she is challenging her for the spot because she wants to help grow the relationship between the community and elected officials.
