For the 19th year the King Kullen Supermarket chain held its annual “Check Out Hunger” campaign, raising $35,000 for Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

From October through December 2015, shoppers donated using a coupon when checking out at the register of King Kullen and Wild By Nature stores, said Lloyd Singer, spokesman for the chain, in a press release. One hundred percent of those donations go to the food bank, which has been feeding Long Island’s hungry since 1980.

King Kullen Co-President Brian J. Cullen stated, “King Kullen has been a longtime supporter of the Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank. We are pleased to partner with our customers who contributed to ‘Check Out Hunger’ to assist Long Island Cares in its mission to provide emergency food where and when it is needed. Helping those in need in the communities we serve is a tradition that dates back to my grandfather, Michael J. Cullen, who founded King Kullen in 1930.”

“King Kullen has a long history of making a difference in the fight against hunger and its customers have always been charitable in supporting our mission,” observed Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank Executive Director Paule T. Pachter. “Together, we continue to help improve the lives of our neighbors on Long Island.”

According to Singer, the Smithsonian Institute has recognized King Kullen as America’s first supermarket. The chain operates 36 King Kullen supermarkets and five Wild by Nature stores across Long Island.
