The outstanding efforts of Oceanside residents Tommy Hannon and Payton McMahon highlighted South Nassau Communities Hospital’s 19th Annual “Communities for a Cure” Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk and Multi-Cultural Health Fair on Sept. 26.

Hannon, 12, completed the 5K run in 26:20 to finish first among all runners in the 8 to 12 age division. McMahon was the race’s youngest finisher, posting a time of 33:19. More than 400 New York metro area road-runners of all ages competed in the race. Brooklyn resident William Frederic, 17, won the race with a time of 18:50. Monique Flemming, a 16 year-old who is also from Brooklyn, was the first female to cross the finish line, posting a time of 20:58.

In addition to the 5K Run/Walk, the Multi-Cultural Health Fair featured over 60 tables with displays from departments of the hospital and community agencies. Free health screenings for cardiac risk factors including cholesterol, Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure were offered, as well as screening for prostate cancer (PSA). Proceeds from the run and raffles benefited South Nassau’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. The annual event is a celebration of the hospital’s mission to ensure that all individuals regardless of their race, creed or ability to pay are provided the standard-setting health care services and programs that they deserve.

The major sponsors of the event included: Complete Women’s Imaging, Inc.; Subway Sandwiches of Wantagh; Papa John’s of Oceanside; 7-Eleven (Merrick Rd., Oceanside); Allstate Insurance – Michael Mullen; Astoria Federal Savings; The Bristal; Functions Unlimited; Hospice of New York; King Kullen Grocery, Inc.; KJOY 98.3 FM; Lexus of Rockville Centre; Myriad Genetic Labs; Nassau Financial Federal Credit Union; Rita’s Ices of Oceanside; RVC Lanes; and South Shore Fitness.
