Island Park firefighters responded on the evening of Dec. 30 to a small fire at the E. F. Barrett Power Station at 1 McCarthy Rd.

A spokesman for National Grid, the company that owns the power plant, said that the fire was reported late in the afternoon and was extinguished by evening. The fire was in a unit connected to one of the gas turbines, the spokesman said, adding that there were no injuries and no outages were associated with the fire.

The older of the two generating units was built in the late 1950s. A second generator was added a decade later. The facility also houses 12 combustion turbines that are 40 years old.
