Messages prompted increased security and bag checks; threats were not credible

Nassau County police arrested a Long Beach High School student on Tuesday after written threats against the school were reported earlier this week.

The suspect, a 15-year old, was taken into custody at the high school and transported to the Nassau County Police Department for processing, police said. He is being charged with making a terroristic threat, which was discovered on Tuesday morning. He was expected to be arraigned on Wednesday at Nassau County Family Court in Westbury. Police did not release his name because he is a minor.

Also, school officials said that another comment was found on a student’s graffiti-covered desk on Monday threatening that Long Beach High School would be the target of an attack on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Police and school officials later determined that that threat was not credible, though the school increased its security Tuesday as a precaution, which included bag checks throughout the day and a greater police presence.

The arrest was in connection with the second message discovered Tuesday morning, according to a statement released by Schools Superintendent David Weiss on Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday’s comment was found on a separate desk and claimed that a violent threat would be carried out on Wednesday. Police were notified of the second threat and the student suspected of writing the comment was taken into custody, police said. The heightened security remained in effect on Wednesday as well.

“The district does not tolerate such threats, pranks and rumors,” Weiss said in his statement. “We suggest parents talk to their children about the severity of such behaviors and the potential long-term negative consequences associated with such actions.”

Officials said that neither threat was credible; officials have yet to determine who was responsible for the threat that was discovered on Monday.

Additionally, a possible verbal threat was made over the weekend that also sparked some concerns, although that incident was unrelated and determined not to be a threat at all, Weiss said.
