Think about what you know now, January 2010, that you didn’t know a year ago. Standing on the threshold of the new year, we have a moment to look back at how those 365 days changed us, as individuals and as a people and as paid-up members of the human race.

It may seem odd to confess in a newspaper column, but this year I went on a week-long news fast. Actually, it was the week up to and including Thanksgiving that I blacked out the news; I needed to clear my mind.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is the day which, according to our tradition, man was created. The event of creation took place 5,770. As such, each year at this time Jews throughout the world gather in synagogues for prayer and to re-establish their spiritual roots.
