Bishop denies meeting to Sacred Heart parents
Bishop William Murphy, leader of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, said he will not meet with parents of students at Sacred Heart School in North Merrick. The parents hoped to discuss options for saving the school, which is slated to be closed next June. more

Envirothon emphasizes damage in forests
Call it a tale of two forests. On the west side of the Meadowbrook Parkway, on the outskirts of Freeport and Roosevelt, there is the 73-acre Roosevelt Preserve, owned and maintained by Nassau County. There, the wide paths are clear of fallen trees and shrubbery and virtually trash-free. There is no evidence of campfires having burned down swaths of the woods, nor is there graffiti marring the abundant oaks and maples. more

Booker T. Gibson, a nearly lifelong Merrick resident, was the first African-American teacher at South Junior-Senior High School in Valley Stream. He was joined by his wife of 39 years, Frances, also a music teacher, at their North Merrick home.
Breaking racial barriers at every turn
By his own admission, Booker T. Gibson wasn’t the most athletic student at Mepham High School in Bellmore in the 1940s, so becoming popular at a school that placed a high value on success in sports –– in particular, in wrestling –– was no easy feat. But, man, could Gibson play boogie-woogie piano, and at the time this highly rhythmic style of the blues ruled the airwaves. more
