For decades, public health officials have hammered home a message –– smoking kills. They have done so in splashy advertising campaigns and in the halls of government. Any number of laws and ordinances prohibiting smoking in public venues have been passed as a result. These efforts, officials say, have paid dividends.

Update: 10:00 a.m. Four Brooklyn men brandishing knives and possibly a handgun invaded a North Bellmore home on Bellmore Avenue on Monday morning, around 9 a.m., and Nassau County police officers pursued the men into Merrick and later the Wantagh-Seaford area, firing shots at and wounding one of the suspects, authorities said.

The Merrick American Legion’s ceremony to remember the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks started solemnly on Sunday with an invocation by Rabbi Paul Kirchner, but surprisingly it ended on an upbeat note when Sacred Heart School sixth-grader Alyssa Pallotta, dressed in a pink dress, took to the podium and sang “God Bless America.” Many in the crowd of 200 spontaneously joined hands and joined in singing this most American of songs.

Updated: 5:15 p.m., Sept. 9, 2011: An eastbound Long Island Rail Road train struck and killed a New Jersey man at the Merrick train station just before 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan. Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Nassau County police were on hand to investigate with LIRR officials.
