Update: 10:00 a.m. Four Brooklyn men brandishing knives and possibly a handgun invaded a North Bellmore home on Bellmore Avenue on Monday morning, around 9 a.m., and Nassau County police officers pursued the men into Merrick and later the Wantagh-Seaford area, firing shots at and wounding one of the suspects, authorities said.

The 25th annual Bellmore Family Street Festival will kick off with a carnival on Sept. 15 and run through Sept. 18. More than 120,000 people are expected to attend, making this mega-event one of the largest street festivals in Nassau County.

The flooding rains that hit Long Island’s South Shore on Aug. 14 might be a preview of what could happen if a hurricane were to strike here. That’s why County Legislator Dave Denenberg, a Democrat from Merrick, hosted a hurricane-preparedness seminar last Wednesday at the North Bellmore Library.

A massive storm dumped nearly 10 inches of rain on the Merrick-Bellmore area from Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, flooding the Meadowbrook Parkway and homes throughout the community. At the storm’s height, rain was falling at a rate of more than an inch an hour.

On most any summer weekend, it’s easy to find sunbathers soaking up rays at Long Island’s many beaches, but whether they have taken the necessary steps to protect their skin isn’t as evident. Some 100 million Americans suffer from skin cancers and diseases, according to the American Skin Association. That’s why Bellmorite Edward Diller, a longtime supporter of the nonprofit organization, has launched the Pan Long Island Challenge to raise awareness about skin disorders as well as money for research.

A little Hollywood glitz and glamour came to Bellmore last week for the 14th Annual Long Island International Film Expo, which boasted eight days of independent films from around the world. The festival kicked off with a preview night on July 7 and an opening-night party the following evening.

The 14th annual film festival will kick off with a preview night on Thursday, July 7, and an opening night party on Friday, July 8, at 5 p.m. for all ticket holders.
