Michael McHale, a 16-year-old student at Lynbrook High School, was hit by a westbound, non-passenger train at the Lynbrook Long Island Rail Road station at about 5:40 p.m. on March 9, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said. McHale was later pronounced dead at South Nassau Communities Hospital. The Lynbrook Fire Department was called to the station platform, answering a report of a person being hit by a train, said Steve Grogan, spokesman for the department. Grogan said McHale did not respond to resusitation efforts, and was rushed to the hospital. Sam Zambuto, spokesman for the Long Island Rail Road, said that the MTA police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide. As a result of the incident, service was affected on the Babylon branch, and riders were redirected to the Long Beach branch, according to Zambuto. more
High winds and driving rain caused widespread damage on Saturday afternoon. Trees were uprooted in many south shore communities, and there was extensive damage to vehicles and property. more
During the third budget work session for the Lynbrook School District, officials detailed that facilities costs in the 2010-11 budget have decreased by five percent, the elementary science program will be redesigned, and five teachers in the district will be excessed due to a projected decrease in enrollment. more
The Nassau County Robbery Squad arrested John Brooks, 58, of Springfield Gardens, in connection with a series of bank robberies that started in October of 2009. One of those banks was the Bethpage Federal Credit Union located at 613 Sunrise Highway, Lynbrook, which was held up on Dec. 16, 2009. more
Dan Peck was born into a family of leaders. The 26-year-old Lynbrook resident has two older brothers who served in the armed forces, and, while in high school, Peck said, he led various service organizations. So for him it felt only natural to join the Army in 2001 and eventually lead an Army artillery unit in Salah ad Din, a northern province of Iraq. more

The Historical Society of East Rockaway and Lynbrook sponsored four winter tea events. The first one was a Chocolate Valentine’s Day tea. It was followed by a Palm Beach Tea, a Gone With The Wind Tea and this year’s Very Berry Tea. The tea is a fund raiser to help offset costs of our history programs. Mary Colway, Board of Trustee member, who coordinates the tea said that the teas are held in the winter to not only raise funds but to raise “fun times in the shivery days of wintry weather.” more
