As Covid-19 cases recently began to rise across the Lynbrook School District, Lynbrook North Middle and West End Elementary schools switched to full remote learning for two weeks, starting Monday. District officials were recently notified of cases in both schools and the high school, with a total of 14 cases confirmed since the school year began.

Lynbrook parents said at the Oct. 14 Board of Education meeting that they were angry that students could no longer return to in-person classes if they wanted, after spending the first quarter online. District officials had previously told parents that students would be given that option at the end of the first marking period, which will end Nov. 13.

The pressure for schools to expand their curriculums on the subject of racial inequality, systemic bias and modern injustices continues to increase with the strengthening of the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of George Floyd’s death. There is now a greater push than ever to widen kindergarten through 12th grade teachings in order to ensure that students learn about racism in modern times.
