Lynbrook High School students Erica and Matthew DeMichiel collected over 120 new children’s books at multiple sites in Lynbrook and East Rockaway on behalf of First Book-Long Island, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing new books to children from low-income households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The group’s mission is to instill a love of reading in youngsters who would not otherwise have access to books in their homes. more

In June, the Nassau County Legislature approved a bill that would close the sewer plants in the villages of Lawrence and Cedarhurst and transfer their waste to the county’s facility in Bay Park. On Oct. 1, the Town of Hempstead board unanimously voted to sue the county as well as Lawrence and Cedarhurst in an attempt to stop the consolidation until state environmental agencies determine how the extra sewage processed by the Bay Park facility will affect Reynolds Channel, where the plant pumps treated effluent. more

Attracting businesses to Lynbrook has long been a challenge for the village, and some say the parking fund law that requires commercial building owners to pay $10,000 for each parking space they fall short of the minimum number of spaces the zoning code requires is being applied arbitrarily to businesses in the village. more
