September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The month may be nearly over, but suicide prevention is a topic that needs to be discussed year-round.

A Nassau County police officer was found dead Monday morning at Mill Pond Preserve in Bellmore. Police report that a pedestrian was walking through the preserve when he came across a male’s body on the bike bath. It is believed to be an act of suicide.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people.Therefore, the leading cause of death among children and teens is preventable. That’s a fact—and yet we’re losing an increasing number of young people.

Six months ago, a 24-year-old woman from Franklin Square took her own life. Two weeks ago, a 24-year-old Franklin Square man killed himself in his parents’ home. A close friend of both of them said they seemed happy. They were both athletic, had great senses of humor and smiled for every photo.
