Dubbed a “superstorm” by weather forecasters, Hurricane Sandy pummeled Bellmore-Merrick with floodwaters that reached three to six feet in many parts of south Bellmore and south Merrick and destroyed homes and cars, while also bringing hurricane-force wind gusts that toppled trees, tore the siding off houses, and ripped apart fences and decks.

I am 25 years old, and until recently, I had never dived into the water. Call me crazy, but the prospect of plunging headfirst into a deep pool of blue had always spurred a sense of anxiety in me. Six children, all of whom suffer from cerebral palsy and cannot speak, were taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow on Friday after the bus they were traveling in collided with a car on Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick, just outside the Brookside School, according to fire officials.

As if straight out of a television commercial, a young camper asked New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford the question — “Since you’ve just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?”
No, he did not say, “I’m going to Disney World.” Instead, Weatherford smiled and said, “I’m going to Coleman Country Day Camp.” The response evoked raucous applause from the hundreds of Coleman Country Day campers who looked on in awe at the recent Super Bowl champion.

The two social workers had been counseling drug addicts on how to stay clean. Then, on July 5, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano slashed funding for drug-treatment and youth services, and suddenly they were without jobs. One is the mother of three children, all under age 12, whose husband is unemployed. The other is a single woman who had recently taken out a mortgage to buy a fixer-upper home.

South Shore residents accustomed to jumping in their boats and heading out for a day of clamming in Hempstead Bay will have to travel farther this spring and summer. At the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Town of Hempstead’s shellfishing areas west of the Wantagh Parkway were closed in February, with additional areas closed on April 1. Affected areas include the waters south of Bellmore, Merrick and Freeport.
