After the crash, emergency medical technicians moved the children from one bus to another in order to transport them to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. Because the children could not speak, officials said, they had to go to the hospital.

Six children, all of whom suffer from cerebral palsy and cannot speak, were taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow on Friday after the bus they were traveling in collided with a car on Meadowbrook Road in North Merrick, just outside the Brookside School, according to fire officials. more

Barry Wilansky, executive director of Tempo Group, a South Shore drug-treatment agency, said he was forced to lay off two social workers when Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano recently eliminated funding for private, nonprofit drug-treatment and youth-service providers.

Nassau County slashes Tempo Group's funds

The two social workers had been counseling drug addicts on how to stay clean. Then, on July 5, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano slashed funding for drug-treatment and youth services, and suddenly they were without jobs. One is the mother of three children, all under age 12, whose husband is unemployed. The other is a single woman who had recently taken out a mortgage to buy a fixer-upper home. more

Town of Hempstead to postpone feral cats move

Protesters’ signs jeered at the Town of Hempstead on Sunday, calling a decision to trap and move feral cats in a colony at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore “cruel” and “corrupt.” The town had planed to move dozens of feral cats from their makeshift protected shelter behind the baseball field at the park. The move was set to begin on May 1, but following the weekend’s protest, the town has postponed the relocation. more

FDA, DEC shut down town shellfishing areas

South Shore residents accustomed to jumping in their boats and heading out for a day of clamming in Hempstead Bay will have to travel farther this spring and summer. At the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Town of Hempstead’s shellfishing areas west of the Wantagh Parkway were closed in February, with additional areas closed on April 1. Affected areas include the waters south of Bellmore, Merrick and Freeport. more

Community Concert Association needs subscribers

The Merrick-Bellmore Community Concert Association has been a staple of the community since the early 1950s. It’s now winding down its 58th season, and it will begin the 2012-13 season, its 59th, in September. But if the organization is to make it to its 60th season, it may need a significant boost in attendance, said President Mark Manas. more

Police officer found dead at Mill Pond

A Nassau County police officer was found dead Monday morning at Mill Pond Preserve in Bellmore. Police report that a pedestrian was walking through the preserve when he came across a male’s body on the bike bath. It is believed to be an act of suicide. more

ESPN broadcasters return to Kennedy

With the lights dimmed in the auditorium at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, students chanted the well-known ESPN SportsCenter theme song. The buzz was electric as more than 200 students, faculty members, parents and alumni eagerly awaited the arrival of ESPN broadcasters, and Kennedy alumni, Steve Levy and Adam Schefter. more
