Laron McGravey, the driver who saved a dozen Merrick Avenue Middle School students from a fire that engulfed their school bus last month, was honored by the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education at its May 4 meeting. more

Remaking Jewish education for kids with special needs

One day not long ago, Merokean Susan Saban was sitting in a holiday service at Temple Beth Am of Bellmore-Merrick. A mother of a child with developmental disabilities kept getting up to attend to the boy, who was disrupting the service. Saban’s heart sunk. She knows well the challenges faced by children with disabilities and their families. She is the assistant director of pupil personnel services in the Herricks School District, and is charged with providing services for children with special needs. more

The Animal Advocates club at Kennedy High School in Bellmore lent a hand to piping plovers, which are on the Endangered Species List, by spending the morning of March 26 stretching out two miles of wire to mark the birds’ nesting area at Jones Beach State Park and protect them from beach-goers. more

JV Bulldogs go 19-1, capture county title

The Bellmore-Merrick junior-varsity Bulldogs hockey team captured the Nassau County High School Hockey League Championship on Feb. 23 with a 4-1 victory over Port Washington. The squad ended the year with a 19-1 record. The only loss was to Port Washington earlier in the month. more
