At a public meeting that turned raucous at times, the Bellmore-Merrick Central District Board of Education voted on Wednesday to allow the Police Activity League’s lacrosse program to use one middle school football field each year.

The Holy High Days of Judaism may be coming to a close, but there is still one more celebration to be had this year. Many houses around Bellmore and Merrick could be seen with small huts, called sukkahs, in their backyards to mark the Jewish holiday of Sukkot this past week.

Thomas Crotty stood and stared for a moment on Friday at the twisted, rusted, 1,600-pound steel girder in front of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School in North Merrick. “It was very thoughtful of the community and the young people to do this so the day and the people will not be forgotten,” Crotty remarked.

The U.S. could be in for one very active hurricane season, according to weather experts. That, in part, prompted Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg, a Democrat who represents Bellmore-Merrick, to hold a hurricane-preparedness seminar on Wednesday at the Freeport Library.

At a July 13 public meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central Board of Education announced that it would allow only Central District teams to play on its five main football fields, thereby prohibiting youth groups from using the fields for football, soccer, lacrosse and other sports.
