Kennedy High School senior Max Krackow was recently named a Coca-Cola Scholars Program semifinalist. He was joined at Wednesday's Board of Education meeting by Dr. Henry Kiernan, the Central High School District's superintendent, and Susan Schwartz, a Board of Education trustee.

Central swimmers set sights on Jericho

They might not know it, but members of the Jericho boys’ swim team have targets on their backs. The Bellmore-Merrick Sharks tied Jericho last season, and fell to the squad by two points in a meet this year. The Sharks now say they’re hoping for a different outcome the next time the two teams meet, at the county championships in February. They want to win. more

Artificial turf on Central agenda for Feb. 16 meeting

At the Jan. 5 meeting of the Central High School District Board of Education, Eric Strezenec, the father of a Calhoun High School athlete, called on the board to offer exact figures on the cost of installing three synthetic-turf fields at Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools, including how much the project would raise local property taxes. more

Joshua Golub, a Calhoun High School senior, was recently named a semifinalist in the 2010-11 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. About 2,100 high school seniors, out of 71,000 applications, are in the running for $3 million in scholarships offered by the program. Two hundred and fifty finalists will be chosen to travel to Atlanta in April for a final interview. more

Is passing more important than understanding?

When it comes to school, my philosophy is that almost everything follows the “10-year rule.” That is, in 10 years, nearly all students will probably forget almost everything that they have learned unless they continue to use the knowledge they have acquired. Because of this, classes cannot be based on rote memorization. more
