Calhoun High School senior Erin Zseller will travel to Uganda in June as part of a volunteer mission sponsored by the San Diego-based Invisible Children, a nonprofit aid organization.

Off to Uganda, with love

In early June, Calhoun High School senior Erin Zseller will head to the war-ravaged nation of Uganda as part of a two-week volunteer mission sponsored by the non-profit organization Invisible Children. Zseller was chosen from a pool of 10 Calhoun applicants, and she will be the fourth student from the school to make the trip to Uganda in the past three years. more

Central District to nix middle school substitutes next year

Kennedy High School junior Ross Shulman returned to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting last Wednesday to make his case that the district should eliminate substitute-teachers to save money and preserve full-time teaching positions. Instead of substitutes, Shulman advocated for a plan to use empty general-purpose rooms and cafeterias to house students under the direction of aides when their teachers are absent. more
