Merrick family hosts Fresh Air child
As a child growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Merokean Jack Chin learned firsthand the importance of the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Town program, which sends inner-city children to live with families in suburban and rural areas to expose them to life outside the big city. Chin spent nearly 10 summers with a host family, and now he finds joy in opening his own home to Reggie Holdip through the Fresh Air Fund every summer. more

Rebuilding ground zero
On Aug. 5, I traveled to ground zero in Lower Manhattan to photograph the epicenter of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, nearly 10 years later. As I scaled the subway steps leading to Vesey Street, on the north side of what had been the World Trade Center before September 11, 2001, I was uncertain what to expect when I reached the top of the staircase. The last time that I visited ground zero, in August 2006, I felt forlorn. It was a hauntingly empty place. What would I find this time? more

I remember driving west on Park Avenue in Long Beach with my then 1 1/2-year-old daughter tucked in her car seat behind me. It was midday, and the sun shone so brightly. There was a break between the buildings, and through it I could peer toward the destruction. more
