Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s three high schools and two middle schools will dismiss students earlier than usual Tuesday due to the snowstorm moving into the area. Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools will end their school day at 1:30 p.m. today, and Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools will end their school day at 2:15 p.m. There will be no late buses at any of the schools, and all afternoon and evening activities in the district are cancelled. more

Our neighbors were coming over that evening for coffee and cake, and as I sat in my French class sometime after 1 p.m., I was thinking about birthday cake and the upcoming weekend. In most bathrooms, one or more sinks and toilets are broken and covered over. In Mepham High School’s football locker room, where the smell of sweat suffuses the air, the sink is sealed with plywood and the urinals are cemented over. more
Thousands of fair-goers flooded Merrick Avenue in downtown Merrick for the 23rd annual Fall Festival, sponsored by the Merrick Chamber of Commerce. By far, the festival was the largest Chamber of Commerce-sponsored fair to date, said Randy Shotland, the chamber president. more
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the Merrick Fire Department will hold a brief ceremony to honor the lives of two of its members, Ex-Chief Ronnie Gies and Ex-Capt. Brian Sweeney, who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, as well as those of all other 9/11 victims. The observance will take place at 7 p.m. at the firefighters’ memorial on Merrick Avenue between Sunrise Highway and the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station. more
