A red sedan slid off Merrick Road at 9:10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, as it traveled east between Babylon Road and Lindenmere Drive, clipping one tree and slamming into another in front of Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick.

Workers for Hogan Plumbing and Heating, Inc. struck a natural gas pipe last Friday afternoon behind Merrick Shopping Center, according to Don Hogan, the company’s owner. The Merrick Fire Department evacuated more than a dozen houses near the shopping center, and the Nassau County Police Department shut down a block of Merrick Road, but officials quickly determined that there was no danger.

Merrick residents articulated many reasons why they do not want to see a 7-Eleven open at 150 Merrick Road, opposite Levy-Lakeside Elementary School, during a June 10 Hempstead Town Council meeting. Town officials, however, said there was nothing they could do legally to stop the business from moving in.

Roughly 200 pedestrians were killed on Long Island streets from 2010 to 2012, according to “The Region’s Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” a report produced by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit organization committed to decreasing pedestrian fatalities. Eighty-eight died on Nassau County streets.
