More charges added against Senator Skelos and son
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara added more charges to the indictment against Senator Dean Skelos and his son, Adam, late in the day on Tuesday, July 21. Skelos, 67, and his son Adam, 32, were already charged with six counts stemming from what Bharara said was a scheme in which Skelos was trading favors with businesses in exchange for payments made to his son. more

A plan to reform health care statewide
Nassau University Medical Center President Dr. Victor Politi and State Sen. Kemp Hannon announced on June 29 the hospital’s participation in an ambitious statewide incentive plan that aims to reform the health care system by focusing on greater care for at-risk, low-income patients to reduce “avoidable hospitalizations,” thereby lowering state Medicaid costs. If successful, the program could net hundreds of millions of dollars in state funding for Long Island and Queens hospitals over the next five years, portions of which would go the NUMC. more

A Calhoun High School student suffered a “severe case of alcohol poisoning” after drinking at a party last Wednesday night in the woods behind Brookside School in North Merrick, according to Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, which oversees Calhoun, had asked Uniondale company Summit Security Services to keep watch that night at Brookside, said Central District Superintendent John DeTommaso. Above, a Summit SUV was parked that night outside Brookside as emergency vehicles’ lights flashed at the woods’ edge.
EMTs pull drunken teen from ravine
The teenager, a student at Calhoun High School, had a “severe case of alcohol poisoning,” said Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings in an email to parents on June 12. He drank at a “large gathering” of Calhoun seniors in the woods between Brookside School and the Meadowbrook State Parkway, Hollings wrote. more
