Making college campuses safer
Last week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo put forward a bill that would help combat sexual assault on college campuses across New York. The bill, part of the governor’s Enough is Enough initiative, would make all colleges in the state, which enroll some 1.2 million students, comply with initiatives the governor instituted at SUNY schools last year, including setting up a statewide definition of affirmative consent and creating a Bill of Rights for victims and survivors of sexual assault. more

Mepham state qualifiers talk mud-soaked course
To understand how trying the 2014 New York State Cross-Country Championship was, you only need compare Charles Skidmore’s performances over the past two years. The Mepham High School senior first ran in the state championship in 2013. He placed 77th in a time of 16:17. This year he moved up 19 places, to 58th, but his time dropped by 45 seconds, to 17:02. more

At 15, Merrick native Heather Leibowitz lit out for Ute Mountain in Colorado. She went to study Hopi Indian culture and to dig for relics in a pit at the foot of the mountain, which is surrounded by an expanse of dusty, brush-covered plains. more

In her years at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, Merokean Sara Rosenzweig grew accustomed to finishing first among Cougar cross-country and track runners. She twice qualified for the New York State High School Cross-Country Championship, and ended her high school career last spring by capturing the Nassau County steeplechase title. more
