Josh Levine, 16, of Merrick, at right, suffered a concussion in a Kennedy High School junior-varsity baseball game last spring, when a runner slammed into him while he was playing catcher. He was knocked unconscious and now struggles to concentrate and read. He was joined here by his family in April at the annual 5K Robbie’s Run that they sponsor in honor of his late brother, who died while rounding the bases during a Little League practice. Calhoun baseball alumni drafted by MLB teams

Jake Thomas and Alex Vargas, both 21, played baseball together in 2011 at Calhoun High School under legendary coach Joe Corea. In 2010, Thomas led the Colts squad that captured the Nassau County Class AA title. In 2012, Vargas played a critical role in the Colts’ victory at the Long Island Class AA championship. Major League teams recently drafted them both. more

On May 9, Calhoun High School rededicated its baseball diamond as the Joe Corea Field, named for the Colts’ legendary baseball coach of 46 years. Corea, now 71 and retired, took part in the ceremony with his family and many from the Calhoun community.
