Weary homeowners battered by Hurricane Sandy began to trickle into the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s mobile Disaster Recovery Center at Nassau Community College’s Student Union, a red-brick building on the west side of the campus, when it opened last Friday. The center was set up to help homeowners who suffered losses in the massive storm to file for grants that will enable them to rebuild.

On Nov. 7, my husband, Dr. Leonard (a.k.a. Len) Schreiber, lost his long and courageous battle against AML leukemia. His funeral service took place at Gutterman's Funeral Home in Rockville Centre, and his military burial was held at Wellwood Cemetery on Nov. 13. Since he was an Air Force veteran, taps was played and I was presented with the American flag that had draped his coffin.

Nassau County Police have released photos of four Brooklyn men who allegedly forced their way into a North Bellmore home on Bellmore Avenue on Monday at around 9 a.m., which sent police on a chase that wound through Merrick and eventually Wantagh.

Most Monday mornings, 20-year-old Haris Sumra leaves his Bellmore Avenue home to take his sister to C.W. Post before heading to his own classes at St. John’s University. This Monday, Haris woke up late, and decided to return home to shower and eat breakfast after dropping off his sister.

Update: 10:00 a.m. Four Brooklyn men brandishing knives and possibly a handgun invaded a North Bellmore home on Bellmore Avenue on Monday morning, around 9 a.m., and Nassau County police officers pursued the men into Merrick and later the Wantagh-Seaford area, firing shots at and wounding one of the suspects, authorities said.

I write this assuming it will be true for a lot of my readers: September 11, 2001, was the worst day of my life. It was worse for many than it was for me — I was lucky not to lose my father, a roommate and several close friends who all worked in the towers — but the anger and anguish I felt that day were the most intense I’ve ever known.
