Museum of Natural History honors Kennedy researcher

Kennedy High School senior Beatrice Brown was recently named a 12th-grade winner in the American Museum of Natural History’s annual Young Naturalist Awards, a national contest. Brown won an all-expenses-paid overnight trip to New York City, where she will attend an awards ceremony at the museum and be given a special tour of its collections. Brown said she is excited to attend the ceremony because she has not been to the museum before. more

At a press conference on Feb. 12 at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola, Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, commissioner of the county Department of Public Works; Jon Kaiman, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s special advisor for Long Island storm recovery; Ed Mangano, the county executive; and Todd Kaminsky, a state assemblyman from Long Beach, announced that the state would provide $150 million to upgrade the Bay Park plant with a nitrogen-removal system.

State promises $150 million to better treat sewage

New York state has pledged to fund the installation of a $150 million nitrogen-removal system at the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, which will reduce the environmental harm of the sewage the plant discharges into Nassau County’s Western Bays, state and county officials said on Feb. 12. The officials, speaking at a Mineola news conference, also called on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to provide $550 million more to build an outfall pipe to carry effluent from Bay Park into the Atlantic Ocean. more

The U.S. Maritime Administration and Coast Guard held a public hearing about Port Ambrose, a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal in the Atlantic Ocean 18.5 miles southeast of Jones Beach, last Wednesday night in a ballroom at the Hilton New York JFK Airport in Jamaica, Queens. Port Ambrose opponents, who have assembled into a “No LNG Coalition,” conducted a press conference immediately before the hearing, drawing a few dozen people into a small hotel meeting room feet away from the ballroom.

A company’s plans to build “Port Ambrose,” a liquefied natural gas terminal in the Atlantic Ocean 19 miles southeast of Jones Beach, have stalled for months in a federal review process, but that is likely to change next month. A U.S. Coast Guard official estimated that the government will release a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Port Ambrose in December. more

Jones Beach, a spit of sand with 6.5 miles of Atlantic Ocean beaches, had no barrier island to protect it against Superstorm Sandy on Oct. 29, 2012. It was the barrier island, and so it took the brunt of the tempest that terrible day, leaving the famed state park in ruins. more
