Representatives of the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum recently made their way to the Merrick Library to teach children about the wondrous world of whales, and brought along artifacts such as real whale bones and an Inuit snow knife carved from a walrus tusk.

Merrick's Logan Koester, from left, John Carroll, Matt Pelcher and Peter Sarantakos recently helped lead the Long Island Indians 9U elite baseball team to the prestigious Baseball Heaven Spring League Championship. Their many contributions helped the Indians amass a 14-2 record on their way to the title. They also helped the Indians earn the number one seed at the recent Ripken Yard Tournament in Aberdeen, Md.

I was thinking about spring cleaning this week, which I do every year at this time (think about it), and I realized that I’d prefer a more philosophical, let’s say cerebral, form of cleaning out the cobwebs.
