Bellmore-Merrick girls' swim team sweeps at counties

At its January meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education honored six members of the Central District girls’ swim team, the Sharks, for their outstanding performances at the county and state championship meets. According to veteran members of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School girls’ varsity swim team, the Garden City High School squad has always been hard to beat. Genna Kranis, a senior at Kennedy High School, recalled that the Trojans made a special cake and shirts to celebrate their 100th straight win. Calhoun High School senior Sarah Greco said that Garden City swimmers make celebratory jumps into the pool after successful meets. more

Mepham swimmer takes second at states

The Nassau County record in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle had stood since 1982, long before any current high school student was even born. Austin Kowalsky, a senior at Mepham in North Bellmore, set out to change that this year, and handily did so with a time of 21.1 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than the 30-year-old record. more

Bellmore-Merrick Sharks swim frigid waters for a cause

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District swim team, the Sharks, recently took part in the Long Beach Polar Bear Super Bowl Sunday Splash to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their efforts, combined with support from their families, friends and teachers, enabled them to raise more than $3,300 for the cause. more
