Q. I'm selling my house and know I have some "issues," like a deck with no permit and a finished basement. I read your column about getting permits, and I'm wondering: If I have a buyer who doesn't care and wants to close without permits, does anybody else have to know? more
Q. I read a Herald editorial about not being allowed to use my basement for extra bedrooms, and we already have bedrooms there from before we bought our house. How can my town tell me I can’t have bedrooms when everyone has them and we need the space? more

Because of the costs, we plan to have an attorney write the contract, but the architect and the contractor don’t feel comfortable and want their own version. My attorney says to find someone else who will follow the contracts he writes. What do you suggest? more
Q. We keep hearing commercials for vinyl windows. They seem enticing because the price is so low, but we really don’t know the difference between types. What kind of windows would you choose and why? more
Q. In 2005 we had central air-conditioning installed, separate from our forced-air heating unit. Everything was done according to code, and when I inquired about any permit, they said it's up to me, but in 2005 I had no thoughts of ever moving. Now I'm contemplating selling the home and moving. Will 'no permit' prevent me from getting a buyer, or keep the buyer from obtaining a mortgage? more
