It is at last official: Republican Ed Mangano of Bethpage, a 14-year Nassau County legislator, is our new county executive, having defeated two-term Executive Tom Suozzi by the slimmest of margins.

As it turns out, we have a new Nassau County executive. Democrat Thomas Suozzi conceded defeat to Republican challenger Ed Mangano last week. Suozzi lost by a mere 386 votes.

As of Monday, Thomas Suozzi, Democrat from Glen Cove, was still the county executive. He apparently squeaked by in last week’s election. With 235,985 votes cast, Suozzi was a mere 237 votes ahead of Republican challenger Ed Mangano, a 14-year county legislator. The big question is, what the heck happened to Suozzi?

Sometimes silence is not golden. As Republicans and conservatives have embraced the mantra of “just say no” to anything Obama, they have failed to address in any positive way the critical problems we face. Where are the thoughtful, challenging alternative Republican plans to the Democrats’ economic stimulus package, proposed health care bill and foreign policy initiatives, especially in Afghanistan?
