Oceanside mourns one of it’s bravest

Allen B. Gershkowitz of Oceanside died Feb. 2, at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside. He was born July 16, 1958 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of the late Emanuel and the late Selma (Goldblatt) Gershowitz.

He is survived by his wife Mary (McCabe), two daughters, Erica and Joanna, a sister, Fran Goldberg, a brother-in-law, niece and nephew.

He was employed as a fire district supervisor for the Oceanside Fire District, and was a former captain of Southside Hose Company no. 2., Oceanside Fire Department where he had been a member for 38 years.The funeral was held on Feb. 5 at Towers Funeral Home Inc., with the burial at the Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY.

He was remembered as witty and a genuinely nice person.
