In response to a story, “Two village officers injured during arrest,” (Oct. 29-Nov. 4), Laura Dennis, referring to herself as "the girlfriend” of her alleged assailant, James Fowler, wrote in an e-mail and an online posting on the Herald’s Web site that information contained in the police report — and the Herald article based on it — was incorrect. Saying the story was “concocted” by police, she accused officers of using racial profiling and excessive force in making the arrest. more
Rockville Centre's five school board trustees voted unanimously to accept a State Environmental Quality Review Act study that concluded that the proposed renovations of South Side High School would have “no significant adverse environmental impact.” The vote paved the way for the board to authorize, also unanimously, a special district meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17, for the public to vote on the proposed $31.8 million bond issue referendum. If the Rockville Centre school district has its way, residents will approve a bond financing major improvements to South Side High School — and possibly other district schools — that could mean an increase in taxes of $185 for the average homeowner when all the money is borrowed. The district’s plan is tentatively scheduled for a mid-December vote, so that proposed renovations to South Side High School can start as soon as school ends in June. more
