Nine members of the Rockville Centre Fire Department — Second Assistant Chief John Thorp, Captain Kimberly Martino, Firefighter/AEMT Gail Atlas-Goodman, Firefighter/AEMT Joseph Howard, Firefighter/EMT Pierre Hourani, Firemedic/EMT Margaret Nelson, Firefighter James Neitz Sr., Lieutenant Joseph Martino and Firefighter/EMT Remy Jean-Francios were honored at a special Firematic Award ceremony hosted by the Town of Hempstead on Oct. 21. They were among 32 individuals recognized for their courage and dedication in protecting local communities.

Members with the Wounded Warrior Project held their annual picnic in Eisenhower Park on Sept. 21.
A local ambassador for the organization, Paul Hastings, accepted a $15,000 donation from the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association. “It was an awesome turnout,” said Hastings, “and it was a more than generous donation from the PBA.”

At a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday morning, the Town of Hempstead passed legislation that regulates where cell antennas and other wireless telecommunications equipment may be placed within the township.

Last week, the Town of Hempstead unveiled its long-awaited plans for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum property. While well intentioned, there is little chance that the town’s vision — or more accurately, lack of vision — will stir anyone’s imagination or solve any of the many problems facing Nassau County.

After some seven years of studies, community meetings, press conferences and tens of millions of dollars spent on planning and consultants, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum remains an aging concrete behemoth surrounded by 77 acres of cracking asphalt. It is a glaring eyesore in one of the nation’s wealthiest counties.
