Nine South Side High school research students have submitted papers to the Intel Science Talent Search this year. A program of Science for Society and the Public, the Intel search is America’s oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition. The event brings together 40of the best and brightest young scientific minds in America to compete for $1.25 million in awards and scholarships.

Many of us have lost jobs or income during the worst recession we’ve endured since the Great Depression. And many people on fixed incomes are feeling the burden of high taxes. To some, this seems like the worst possible time to float a $31.8 million bond to finance school improvements. We understand this view, but we see things differently.

The seemingly irresistible urge to fling pumpkins culminated in success for members of South Side High School's Engineering Club. On the day after Halloween, the group participated for the second consecutive year in the Pumpkin Fling, at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County in Yaphank.

Science is the study of the physical and natural world by using observation and experimentation. It is the process of acquiring knowledge from the surrounding environment through instructional and hands-on activities. South Side High School provides students with the opportunity to expand their scientific boundaries with classes and clubs. But the sharing of knowledge is limited by the available science facilities in our school. The space granted to science education is inadequate for thorough instruction. It is evident that the science facilities require an update.
