On Sunday, residents gathered at the Village Green in Rockville Centre in front of the recently renovated 9/11 memorial to continue their promise to never forget the lives lost on that fateful Tuesday morning in 2001. Residents lit candles to commemorate the nearly 3,000 people that died that day, including 49 from the village.

Rabbi David Lerner and his family were given a warm welcome to their new Rockville Centre home this month. The Sisterhood of Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David presented the new rabbi with a mezuzah and joined him as he hung it on the doorpost of the parsonage on Sept. 6.

After 10 years in Rockville Centre, preceded by decades leading various congregations around Long Island, Rabbi Howard Diamond will lead his final service at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David on Aug. 8, and then retire. Diamond has been the only rabbi there since the two temples merged in 2010, and was instrumental not only in bringing them together, but also in helping the congregants form bonds.

On Saturday, a drive-by farewell took place at Central Synagogue-Beth Emeth in Rockville Centre so congregants could send their wishes in person –though at a distance—to Rabbi Marc Gruber and Rabbi Elliot Skiddell, both of whom are retiring this month. More than 60 families drove past the synagogue, holding signs, waving and honking as the rabbis sat in the shade, spaced apart.

After years of war against the Seleucid Empire, the Jews won back the holy temple in Jerusalem. The Greeks had desecrated the temple, making it a place to bring sacrifices to their chief god, Zeus. The Maccabees cleaned the temple and rededicated it to the service of the Jewish people and God.
