Rockville Centre's five school board trustees voted unanimously to accept a State Environmental Quality Review Act study that concluded that the proposed renovations of South Side High School would have “no significant adverse environmental impact.” The vote paved the way for the board to authorize, also unanimously, a special district meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17, for the public to vote on the proposed $31.8 million bond issue referendum. Kathleen Rice ascended to the district attorney’s post four years ago as a virtual unknown -- a former federal prosecutor and Brooklyn assistant district attorney who had never run for political office before. Back then, she appeared a tad unsure of herself, slightly nervous in her interviews with the Herald. And why not? She was opposing the legendary Denis Dillon, who had served as Nassau County district attorney for 31 years. Despite being a political neophyte, Rice ran a strong campaign, and was elected with 51 percent of the vote to Dillon’s 49 percent. Four years later, we’re happy that Rice was elected. At the same time, he has put in place a host of programs to improve residents’ quality of life, from smoking-cessation regimens to energy-efficiency incentives. more

Capone’s aunt was the only person she knew with diabetes, and her aunt’s case was filled with complications. more
At their first opportunity to comment on the proposed multi-million-dollar renovation of South Side High School, Rockville Centre residents voiced mixed reactions — ranging from characterizing the debt service to pay for it as “a runaway train” to a thank-you for putting the “very important” issue of the community's responsibility for the safety and health of its students before district residents. more
It was an evening of food, music and camaraderie as students, parents and South Side High School faculty gathered in the auditorium of the village’s Recreation Center on Oct. 13 to kick off the school's new 180-member Best Buddies Club, with 12 special education students meeting their specially matched peer “buddies.” more
