Lifelong Rockville Centre resident Madeline Gengler (“Aunt Maddy”) died peacefully on Feb. 20. She was 90 years old.

A dedicated employee of Exxon for 33 years, Gengler kept in touch with many of her former colleagues. She travelled the world with her sister, Marcella, visiting Europe, Jerusalem, Canada and 41 states. Closer to home, she was very active in the Rockville Centre community and the parish of St. Agnes. She kept her wits and sense of humor until the day she died.

Above all, Gengler was described as a dedicated aunt. She was the family’s historian who attended many family functions throughout the United States. She always remembered to send cards on birthdays and anniversaries and to say thanks for visiting or remembering her or another family member. In November, more than 100 family members and friends gathered to celebrate her 90th birthday — an event that her nephew said will long be remembered.

Born on Dec. 1, 1920 to Rose Mack and Gabriel Gengler, she was one of seven children. She attended St. Agnes Elementary School and South Side High School. Secondary courses were taken at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, Pace University and Katherine Gibbs School.

Gengler had 35 nephews and nieces (including spouses) and 70 grand nephews, grand nieces, great grand nephews and great grand nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, stepfather John H. Young, brothers Gabriel (“Bud”)(wife Marge); Joseph (wife, Jacklyn); Thomas and her sisters Rosemary (husband Curtis) and Marcella. She is survived by her brother Alfred and sisters-in law Elizabeth and Eleanor.

Her wake was held on Feb. 25 at Macken Mortuary. A funeral Mass was conducted the next morning at St. Agnes Cathedral. Interment followed at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village.
