When plans for the Valley Stream Skate Park were announced in 2011, both the skateboarding community and village officials were happy with the new endeavor. Now, more than a year later, neither group is pleased with the current setup, and there are plans to move the park from the hockey rink in front of the Long Island Rail Road station to Hendrickson Park.

After 13 months at the Firemen’s Field clubhouse, the Silver Threads senior group is back at Hendrickson Park. The seniors were displaced last August when a heavy rainstorm filled the former administration building with three feet of water, seriously damaging the complex.

Two vacant strip malls on Gibson Boulevard, which have been drawing the ire of neighbors for years, are finally for sale. A sign announcing their status now stands between the two empty buildings, which once housed about a dozen businesses.

For the second straight offseason, Valley Stream’s pool complex will be undergoing major renovations. The pools closed for the summer after Labor Day, and work will begin to refurbish the two locker rooms.

Under sunny skies and with more than 400 people watching, Mayor Ed Fare gave the order. A fire truck’s engine started up, and Valley Stream Auxiliary Police began untying pieces of rope that held two flaps of a black cloth together.

Thousands of Valley Stream residents won’t have to worry about skyrocketing flood insurance costs next year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced last week that it would indefinitely extend lower flood insurance rates to homeowners who were added to the high-risk flood zone in 2009.
